??What Is Sin??
What Is Sin . . . The Big Question

We live in a culture where the idea of sin has become all tangled up in legalistic arguments over right and wrong. When most people consider what sin is, they think of violating the Ten Commandments. And they tend to think of murder and adultery as "major" sins compared with lying, cursing or idolatry as "little" sins. THAT is NOT how Almighty God looks at SIN!
Sin, as defined in the original translations of the Bible, means "to miss the mark." What is the mark? The mark in God's eyes is the standard of perfection established by Him and proven by Jesus. When we look at sin in that light, it is VERY clear that we ALL are sinners.
Psalm 53:3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (KJV)
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (KJV)
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (KJV)
Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (KJV)

Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: (KJV)
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (KJV)

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV)
It does no good to compare ourselves to others, thinking our sin is not as big as that sinner over there! To God, sin is sin! He is SO holy and pure that He CANNOT look on ANY sin! We are sinners, and we cannot be righteous in our own power! It is God's plan that ONLY when we understand our weakness, will we then consider relying on the Perfect Atoning Sacrifice of Jesus Christ (John 3:15-18, 36; 14;6; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 John 5:10-13).

What Is Sin - A Biblical Perspective

Sin is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible, starting with the "original" sin when Adam and Eve ate of the tree of knowledge. Often it seems as if sin is simply the violation of any of God's laws, including the Ten Commandments.
But, Paul gives us this viewpoint: Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (KJV)
Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. (KJV)

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV)

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (KJV)

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)

Titus 3:5-7 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (KJV)

James 2:9-10 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (KJV)
God wants us to SEE our sins. Even those who have not murdered or committed adultery are still guilty in God's eyes when they hate lie, worship false gods like wealth or power instead of God. Dear one, sin in any amount, any way will distance us from God.
Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (KJV)
We must resist the temptation to do wrong, to sin, if we want to be righteous. We can never lean on our good works. 1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (KJV)

What Is Sin . . . A Call to Repentance

The good news about sin is that once we SEE ourselves as sinners, we need only to repent and embrace Jesus to be forgiven. Jesus can forgive us because He died and rose again three days later in victory over sin and death. IF we repent, we shall be forgiven!
Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. (KJV)

Micah 7:18-19 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. 19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. (KJV)

Isaiah 43:25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. (KJV)

Jeremiah 33:8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me. (KJV)

Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. (KJV)

Hebrews 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. (KJV)

Do you want your sins forgiven like this? I do!
The apostle Paul refers to the process of recognizing sin and being responsible for it as "godly sorrow." . . . 2 Cor. 7:10-11 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. (KJV)
Please consider: We ALL have sinned and deserve God's judgment. God the Father, sent His only begotten Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)

Jesus, the Creator and eternal Son of God, lived a completely sinless life. He loved us SO much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve. He was buried, but He rose from the dead according to the Bible. He Lives! If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Saviour, and boldy declare as Peter did, that "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and Hell and spend eternity with God in Heaven. Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. (KJV)
