What the Bible Says About Sin
The topic of sin is very important to anyone who believes in God. IF you accept that there is indeed a God, a Creator, your next big concern is to please Him.
Consider this: an Omniscient (all-knowing), Omnipotent (all-powerful) and Omnipresent (ever present) Being is responsible for your very existence. Your joy, peace and well-being totally depends upon Him. Isn’t it in your best interest to consider what He expects from you, what is acceptable to Him AND what is unacceptable to Him?
Dear one, SIN is that which is totally unacceptable to God. SIN is what angers God. SIN is what brings on His righteous wrath. SIN is what separates man from God, and SIN is what separates us from the possibility of eternal happiness in Heaven. Since the Bible is the Holy Word of God, it makes sense to go there to find out WHAT it states about SIN. This is a very important first step! IF you really want to know what sin is, and what things are sinful, you must go to the Source . . . to God’s Holy Word to find out . . . NOT MAN.
It is not important what man thinks about abortion, blasphemy, cursing, lying, drunkenness, drugs, gambling, homosexuality, racism, etc. The question is: "What does the Bible say about sin?" Most people do NOT want to hear the Truth!!!
Romans 1:21-32 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (KJV)
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (KJV)
Ephesians 5:3-6 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. (KJV)
Colossians 3:5-8 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. (KJV)
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (KJV)
Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. (KJV) . . . Without = outside of Heaven.
Only when we ask: What does the Bible say about sin? . . . can we really know what God considers sinful. And it is only in knowing what God considers to be sin that we can be sure we are pleasing to Him.
As you see from the Scriptures above, the Bible lists many things that are sin in God's eyes.
We should not consider such lists as complete. Note that Paul ends his list with "and such like” (Gal.5:21). Anything that is in conflict with the holy and pure nature of God and His will is sin. His nature and His will are clearly revealed in the Bible, and as such those things oppose Him are clear as well. I think we all are born with an instinct to know right from wrong (Rom.1:20). We can know the difference between right and wrong, and after deciding the difference, we must be careful to avoid all sin. Paul brings truth in a question. 2 Cor. 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? (KJV) . . . Righteousness has absolutely NO fellowship whatsoever with lawlessness and wickedness, and IF you claim righteousness . . . you MUST shirk (avoid, run from) sin.
THE NATURE AND CONSEQUENCE OF SIN
SIN IS SERIOUS. It is wickedness. It is disgusting, distasteful, hateful and offensive to God, and it carries with it unpleasant consequences. In Isaiah's day, the children of Israel complained about God's remoteness (aloofness). Isaiah answered them by writing: Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (KJV) . . . This is a very important point. God is the giver of life. Sin, in separating you from God, separates you from life. That is why Paul rejoiced in: Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; (KJV) . . . ALL are "dead" in their trespasses UNTIL they receive forgiveness! To remain in sin, and to die physically without having sin forgiven, is to condemn yourself to an eternal death and punishment in the lake of fire.
The Old Testament offers us a list of examples regarding the consequences of sin.
#1. Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise, and denied access to the tree of life because of their sin (Genesis 3).
#2. The ancient world was destroyed by a great Flood as a result of the wickedness of the day (Genesis 6-8).
#3. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire and brimstone from heaven because of the abomination of homosexuality (Genesis 19).
#4. Nadab and Abihu were consumed by fire that "went out from the Lord", because they offered up as a part of their worship fire that was not authorized by God (Leviticus 10).
#5. Israel was sentenced to wander in the wilderness for a generation because they refused to enter Canaan (Numbers 14).
#6. Moses was not allowed to enter Canaan after he arrogantly disobeyed God by striking the rock TWICE at Kadesh (Num. 20:11).
#7. Israel was defeated in her battle with the small city of Ai as punishment for Achan's disobedience in stealing forbidden treasure (Joshua 7).
#8. Judges 2:11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: (KJV) . . . This was repeated many times throughout the nation's history. This resulted in many judgments and punishments of Israel by Almighty God.
God made the terms of His relationship with the Jews perfectly clear in His Holy Word.
Deut.28:1-3 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. (KJV)
Deut.28:58-59 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; 59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. (KJV)
These Scriptures are so clear a young child could understand. God promises the Jews blessings for obedience, but SEVERE PUNISHMENT if they disobey! Was the Holocaust a divine punishment of rebellious sinners?
Because God is just, the penalty for sin had to be paid. Because He cares for us, He sent His Son to pay that ultimate price. 2 Cor. 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (KJV) . . . Jesus is the ONLY Cure for sin in the Eyes of God the Father, clearly stated in the Holy Word of God . . . the BIBLE!
