God's Holy and Righteous Wrath

Our SIN brings God's Wrath down on us!

When speaking about God's characteristics, people have absolutely NO difficulty talking about God's grace and love and mercy.  And YES! He certainly does abound in all of these. BUT . . . when it comes to what most people consider God's unpleasant characteristics such as His wrath, chastisement and judgment, many people . . . professing Christians included, simply bury their heads in the sand and pretend that these aspects of God's personality do NOT exist.  This topic is to help set the record straight about our awesome and amazing and perfect God (His wrath included).

We must keep in mind, there is a big difference between God's wrath and His chastisement. His wrath is directed against His enemies.  His chastisement is directed against His adopted children, those "in Christ" when they are unwilling to repent of their sins against Him and correct their behavior. If you do NOT admit you are wrong and that you have sinned against God, He will come down on you like a ton of bricks, until you repent!

God's Holy wrath is simply His justified and righteous anger against evil and wickedness. The phrase "wrath of God" is found 10 times in the Bible. "His wrath" is found 31 times.

If you do not realize and ADMIT that God is RIGHTEOUS and that you are UNRIGHTEOUS, you are trying to mix light and darkness, which CANNOT be done! Light is light and darkness is the complete absence of light. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5). “Men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19). “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. (John 12:46).

Jesus said Paul was sent to: Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. [KJV]

2 Cor. 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. [KJV]

Colossians 1:12-14 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: [KJV]

Righteousness is absolutely essential to God, for it is He Himself. He can no more defraud the godly of their promised comforts, than He can let the wicked go unpunished in their sins. To do so would be like His denying that He is God! And that is impossible. God CANNOT lie!

People who claim to be Christians simply deceive themselves when they CHOOSE to live just as those who live lives of darkness. If we have friends or family who live ungodly lives and yet claim to be Christians, what are we to do about it? Paul clearly tells us.

1 Cor.5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. [KJV] . . . TRUE Christians are to represent our RIGHTEOUS GODIt is not about us.  It is about HIM.  We are to love and serve our precious Lord. We are not to participate in a wicked lifestyle or act as if the wickedness around us is OK . . . because it is NOT OK with God! You should NOT associate with people who call themselves a "Christian" but who live in sexual sin, are greedy, worship false gods, use abusive language, get drunk or are dishonest. God says that we should not even sit down to eat a meal with them. 1 Cor. 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. [KJV] . . . To do so is putting God to open shame. Do NOT lower yourself to hypocrisy.

Because our “GOD IS RIGHTEOUS,” there IS the “WRATH OF GOD” against all UNRIGHTEOUSNESS

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. [KJV]

  • GOD demands righteousness in people.
  • GOD must punish unrighteousness in people.
  • GOD provides for us the Righteousness that He requires. 1 Cor.1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: [KJV] . . . Christ Jesus is our Righteousness!
  • GOD rewards us for believing Him and accepting the Righteousness He has provided.

What a privilege we have as God's children! What amazing grace is shown to those of us who are “in Christ" (Rom.8:1; 1 Cor.1:30; 15:22; 2 Cor.5:17; Gal.3:28; 1 Thes.4:16; 1 Pet.5:14). Our Righteous God, demands righteousness from us, so it only makes sense that He MUST punish unrighteousness. And since God has made a Provision (Jesus) for the Righteousness He demands . . . whose fault is it when that Righteousness is not accepted? Is it God's fault? NO way! God gave you a free will. You can choose the right way OR you can choose the wrong way! Your choice. IF you choose the wrong way, do NOT blame God when His Holy and righteous wrath comes down on you. You have been warned.

Five Truths about the Wrath of God

The doctrine of the wrath of God is NOT taught or preached much in today’s world. Any mention  of God’s wrath upsets today’s modern opinions. It’s too disturbing, too troubling, too biased. The vast majority (Mat.7:13), live as if they were the judge and God is on trial. How can a loving God send me to Hell?” “Why does God always seem so angry?” “Why doesn’t God just leave me alone?” “What I am doing is what most others do, why judge me?” People ask some really stupid questions!

Here are five biblical truths about the wrath of God:
#1. God’s wrath is just.
It has become common for many to argue that the God of the Old Testament is a moral monster that He is by no means worthy of worship. But, the truth is, God’s wrath is in perfect harmony with God’s justice. Romans 2:5-6 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: (KJV) . . . God’s wrath is in perfect proportion to human sinfulness. God’s wrath is His love in action against sin. God’s wrath is never the unpredictable, self-indulgent, irritable, morally dishonorable thing that human anger so often is. God’s wrath is a right and needed reaction to all evil.

#2. God’s wrath is to be feared.
God’s wrath is to be feared because ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV)  God’s wrath is to be feared because we are justly condemned sinners without Christ. Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV) God’s wrath is to be feared because He is powerful enough to do all that He promises. Jeremiah 32:17  Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: [KJV] God’s wrath is to be feared because God promises eternal punishment if a person rejects Christ Jesus. Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (KJV)

3. God’s wrath is consistent in the Old and New Testaments.
So many people think that the Old Testament God as mean, harsh and wrath-filled, and the God of the New Testament as kind, patient and loving. Neither one of these beliefs represent the Scripture’s teaching on the wrath of God, because there are scary descriptions of the wrath of God in both the Old and the New Testament. Dear one, God MUST act fairly and judge sin, or else God would not be God. Jeremiah 30:23 Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. (KJV)  Nahum 1:2 God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. (KJV) Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (KJV) Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. (KJV)

4. God’s wrath is His perfect and righteous love in action against sin.
God is love, and He does all things for His honor and glory. If He, in His wrath, did not bring down judgment on sin, He would be a Liar, and we could not trust Him. God hates sin, and He does NOT lie, so it is only right that His wrath is raised when we sin. 1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (KJV)  Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. (KJV) God doing all things for His honor and glory is a most scary reality for many and it is certainly not good news for sinners. Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (KJV)
Think about these if you do NOT know Jesus as your Saviour:
Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire. (KJV)
Psalm 76:7 Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? (KJV)
Psalm 90:11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. (KJV)
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (KJV)
Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. (KJV)
God must act fairly and judge sin, or else God would not be God. God’s perfect love motivates His wrath against sin.

5. God’s wrath is satisfied in Christ, and ONLY in Christ.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. (KJV)
1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. (KJV)
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (KJV)
Only Jesus can save us from God’s wrath. In saving us from His own wrath, God has done what we could not do, sent His only begotten Son to save us . . . and in doing so, He has done what we do NOT deserve. Thank You Father for Your awesome love. Thank You Jesus that You obeyed Your Father and came to save us. Thank You, thank You, thank You!!!
