The Gospel IS in the Old Testament, Intro
The Gospel Message:
- We all are sinners and the result of being a sinner is that is puts distance between us and God. It separates us from God.
- When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for our sin, IF we are wise enough to believe in Him. His precious Blood is our substitute sacrifice.
- Eternal life is available to everyone . . . but not everyone will enjoy their eternal life. Only those whose names are written in the Book of Life shall go on to Heaven, and those whose names are NOT written in the Book of Life shall have the eternal destiny of an everlasting Hell, along with the devil.
- If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved.
The Old Covenant was the agreement that God made with the people of Israel through Moses on Mount Sinai. It was a covenant of works that promised blessing to the Jews IF they kept the laws of the covenant.
Exodus 19:5-8 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD. (KJV)
That covenant became valid when Moses came down from that terrible mountain with tables of stone and it continued for hundreds of years.
The New Covenant was prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah and would be established with the divided nations of Israel and Judah. It would be different from the Old Covenant established during the Exodus from Egypt.
Jeremiah 31:31-34 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. (KJV)
The Old Covenant would eventually end, but not until the advent of the New Covenant that was meant to replace it. The Bible tells us exactly when the New Covenant was established. It was during the Last Supper, that Jesus told His 12 disciples that this New Covenant would be established in His Blood . . . so, this means that the Old Covenant, the Law of Moses remained in effect throughout the entire earthly ministry of Jesus.
Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. (KJV)
Jesus taught the Old Covenant, NOT the New Covenant. Many Christians think that Jesus taught under the New Covenant. It would make sense, right? The Gospel accounts are found in the New Testament, so He must have been teaching the New Covenant. But when we look at it more closely . . . we will see what Jesus Himself actually says about it.
Matthew 5:17-20 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (KJV)
Jesus did NOT destroy or in any way challenge or weaken the Law of Moses or the Prophets. He clearly states that He came to fulfill the Law, to keep it in full. He warned the people to keep even the least of the commandments of Moses.
During His ministry on Earth, Jesus always upheld the Law as a duty for every Jew. He rebuked leaders who would keep the minor parts of the law like paying tithes on their small herb gardens, but neglecting the most important matters of the Law like justice.
Matthew 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (KJV)
Jesus clearly taught all His listeners to keep the Old Covenant.
As New Testament Christians, we properly read the Old Testament in the Light of the New Testament, considering that the commandments given to the Jews are not always directly applicable to us as born-again believers.
Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. Psalm 95:7-8 For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (KJV)
God speaks to us in this Psalm to tell us what it is that He really wants in worship, and what makes worship TRUE worship. Dear one, when we ‘hear’ His Voice, He wants us to listen to His voice! That is what He wants from us. He wants us to pay attention to His Voice, not just come together.
It is good for people to come to a church service, but its value soon dies out if all we do is sit there while our thoughts are somewhere else. The basic fact of worship is to LISTEN to the Word of God, because it actually is the Voice of God. Pay attention! That is why the explanation of Scripture must be the central thing in public worship. Those churches that have departed from this are making a mockery of worship. Worship must include listening to the Voice of God, hearing what He has to say, and letting His Word correct our attitudes and our reactions. Do you pay attention to what is being said? Do you sit there with your eyes open, apparently attracted by what the Word of God is saying, but I know that is not always true. Some are playing golf, others are rehearsing tomorrow’s work day, others are planning a trip’ others are thinking about a conversation you had two days ago. Dear one, GOD is watching you!
It would be very interesting at the end of a service to know where everybody has been! What God really wants is that whatever else you may do in a service, when His Word is speaking, LISTEN! And not only listen, but pay attention to the Word, do something about it, let it change you.
Hardening the heart is the exact opposite of hearkening to His voice. When you hearken to His Voice, you are not hardening your heart. If you harden your hearts, you are NOT hearkening to His Voice. He gives us an example of what He means by hardening the heart. It occurred shortly after the Israelites had come through the Red Sea and had journeyed only a week or two into the wilderness. They came to a place where there was no water, and they all became thirsty. They had hardly had time to become very thirsty when the leaders of the people came to Moses and started to complain. What are you doing? Leading us out into this wilderness to perish? Where is this God that is supposed to be taking care of us? Why doesn’t He provided water for us?
That, says God, is what it means to harden your heart. This is the problem God has with us. It disturbs God that people can come week after week and hear stirring and glowing reports of what He is doing in many lives and see the evident change that has come to many and experience the release and freedom He is bringing about in many hearts, and still, the minute anything goes wrong with them, they fall apart.
LORD, we pray that You will help us to hearken, and NOT be like the fathers of old who resisted You, angered and displeased You, and grieved You for forty years.
Applying God’s Word to Our Lives
In addition to church, are we persistently seeking quiet times and spaces when we can pay attention and hearken to God's Word letting Him speak peace into our souls?
The Jews continuing to follow the Law of Moses are unfamiliar with God's righteousness . . . for they desperately try to create their own righteousness . . . because they have NOT submitted to the righteousness of God.
Romans 10:3-4 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. (KJV)
Below is a list of MANY of the Old Testament references found within the Books of the New Testament.
Prophetic Truth in the New Testament is presented by quoting specific Old Testament Passages.
<><><>A. “It is written” (Mat. 4:4 quotes Deut. 8:3; Rom. 1:17 quotes Hab. 2:4; I Cor. 1:19 quotes Isa. 29:14, etc.). This phrase is used over 70 times in the New Testament.
<><><>B. “This is what the prophet has written,” (Mat. 2:5-6 quotes Micah 5:2, etc.)
<><><>C. “As it is written in the second Psalm” (Acts 13:33 quotes Psa. 2:7, etc.)
<><><>D. “The Lord has said through the prophet” (Mat. 1:22-23 cites Isa. 7:14; Mat. 2:15 quotes Hos.11:1, etc.)
<><><>E. “The Scripture” saith (John 19:24 quotes Psa. 22:18; Gal. 3:8 quotes Gen. 12:3, etc.) The term “Scripture” is used 48 times in the New Testament, referring to the Old Testament in general or to a specific book of the Old Testament.
Spiritual Truth is confirmed in the New Testament by quoting Old Testament Passages.
<><><>A. By using “for the Scripture saith” the teaching is shown to have its basis in the Old Testament (Rom. 10:11 quotes Isa. 28:16; I Tim. 5:18 quotes Deut. 25:4, etc.).
<><><>B. Old Testament Passages are sometimes just quoted from numerous places in the Old Testament in order to make a point (Rom. 3:10-12 quotes Psa. 14:1-3; Rom. 3:13 quotes Psa. 5:9 and Psa. 140:3; Rom. 3:14 quotes Psa. 10:7; Rom. 3:15-17 quotes Isa. 59:7-8; Rom. 3:18 quotes Psa. 36:1).
Often there is a wide range of Passage quotes used back-to-back to make a point.
Preachers used Scriptures in their teaching.
<><><>A. Jesus used Old Testament Scripture to teach people about Himself and His Mission.
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? Luke 24:45-47 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (KJV)
<><><>B. Jesus showed that people should be acquainted with Scriptural teaching . . . Matthew 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. (KJV)
<><><>C. Early preachers reasoned from and appealed to Scripture. Acts 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, (KJV) Acts18:24 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. Acts 18:28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. (KJV)
<><><>D. People were encouraged to examine the Scriptures to verify the teaching they received . . . Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (KJV) John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. (KJV) . . . How TRUE this is!
Quick and brief phrases are sometimes lifted from the Old Testament to create a point, without even quoting the entire passage.
Sometimes a point is established by referring to “the Scriptures” without quoting a specific Passage.
<><><>A. Christ’s Resurrection is said to be “thus it is written.” 1 Cor. 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: (KJV)
<><><>B. New Testament writers sometimes quoted a Passage without stating where it was found, because there were no chapters and verses at that time. Heb. 2:6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Heb. 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. (KJV)
Inspired writers sometimes quoted or referred to other New Testament Passages as “Scripture.”
<><><>A. 1 Tim. 5:18 quotes Luke 10:7; Mat. 10:10, instead of an Old Testament Passage. 1 Tim. 5:18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. Quotes Luke 10:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And Matthew10:10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. (KJV)
<><><>B. Peter refers to Paul’s writings as “Scripture.” 2 Pet. 3:16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.(KJV)
Every so often a Passage was quoted from a Greek translation instead of the original Hebrew Old Testament. “The Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) was the Bible of Jesus and the apostles. Most New Testament quotations are taken directly from it.
Consider the Following
What does God REALLY want from you?
Lev. 18:4-5 Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. 5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD. (KJV) . . . God wants our loving obedience!
If you do what God wants, HOW will He judge or honor you?
Eze. 18:4-9 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. 5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, 6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, 7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, 9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD. (KJV) . . . All people are treated impartially . . . the LORD does NOT deal in favor with one, and cruelly and unrighteously with the other! There is absolutely NO respect of persons with GOD: (2 Chron.19:7; Rom.2:11; Col.3:25). Whether Jesus in His office as a Judge, who sits on the bench for that purpose; or as a go-between chosen to decide matters in controversy between one man and another, He always does everything fair and right with single person, and is never swayed by prejudice, fear nor favor (2 Cor.5:10; 1 Cor.3:13-18; Mat.25:31-36; Rev.20:11-15).
Is God FAIR in His judgment? . . . YES! Absolutely!
Ezekiel 33:10-20 Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live? 11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 12 Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth. 13 When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. 14 Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; 15 If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. 16 None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. 17 Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. 18 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. 19 But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.20 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways. (KJV)
It is those who criticize God’s judgment who are unfair!
What is the result of God’s judgment?
Ezekiel 33:18-19 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. 19 But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. (KJV)
It is either life or death depending on whether you obey OR disobey Him.
What is meant by "life" and "death" in this context?
Eternal life and eternal condemnation (Daniel 12:2-3).
What responsibility do we have in keeping God’s law?
One must also convert many others to righteousness. To be regarded as a just person, one must lead other sinners to justification (Daniel 12:3).
What is the great problem in all of the above?
It sounds simple so far, but there is a very grave difficulty. No one obeys God’s law properly. There is NOT one righteous man (male or female) on Earth who does not sin. So, death comes to all men and no one is just (Isaiah 64:4-9 Ecc.7:20).
Who can solve this problem?
There is only ONE Exception to the statement that all have sinned. This One truly just Man was despised and sent to His death by His fellow men, as a lamb led to the slaughter. In His amazing love, He offered His perfect life as a sin offering for us all, and God the Father accepted what His only begotten Son did on the cross for us sinners, paying OUR sin’s penalty, because we could not do it. Only through this one Man who died, all men can be justified and live if we simply believe God and accept His Son to save us. 1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV) Thank You Jesus!
God saw that this was fair: that this one Perfect Man should make atonement and intercession for all sinful men who come to God through Him. Isaiah 53:3-12 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (KJV).
How can you and I personally benefit from this solution?
The same way anyone else down through the ages has ever been justified: we must have faith in this one Perfect Man, and follow Him. Hab. 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. (KJV) Gen. 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. (KJV) Do you have this kind of faith?
