The Gospel IS in Isaiah Chapter 53

Chapter 53 of Isaiah is one of the great Chapters of the Old Testament. It was written more than 700 years before Jesus came, yet it describes His life, His death and His resurrection perfectly. We have in this Chapter, the Gospel, the Good News of the Coming of Christ Jesus.
Some teach that Isaiah 53 does not refer to Jesus, but that it is just a picture of the suffering and hardship of the nation Israel. BUT, the New Testament clearly declares that Isaiah 53 is a prophecy about Jesus Christ. In Acts 8, when Philip met the Ethiopian eunuch along the desert road, he found the man from Ethiopia reading: Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. (KJV)
And the eunuch said to Philip, “Of whom speaketh the prophet this; of himself, or of some other man?” And the Bible says that Philip began at the same Scripture (at Isaiah 53:7), and preached unto him Jesus! Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. (KJV) Isaiah 53 clearly tells us about Jesus, the Messiah!

The fact that Isaiah wrote this intense detail about Jesus more than seven centuries before He was born, is one of the convincing proofs of the divine inspiration of the Old Testament prophecies. No man in his own wisdom could ever have written such a clear and full account of the sufferings of Christ, seven centuries before it all happened. Isaiah 53 clearly tells us about Jesus.

The first two verses tell us about His virgin birth: Isaiah 53:1-2 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (KJV)

The next two verses tell about His earthly life: Isaiah 53:3-4 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. (KJV)

The next six verses tell about His substitutionary death: Isaiah 53:5-10 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. (KJV)

The last two verses tell us about His glorious Resurrection: Isaiah 53:11-12 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (KJV)

We have in Isaiah 53 a complete picture of the life of Jesus, but as verse 1 says, multitudes fail to accept Him: Isaiah 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? (KJV) . . . And we read in: John 12:37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: (KJV)
Even though he had done so many miracles before them . . . openly, and in the presence of them. They believed not on him . . . all the miracles done by Christ before their very eyes, which they could not deny, nor nullify, which were so many, and so great, simply strengthed their unbelief. Such is the nature of the sin of unbelief, and so deeply rooted, that even the most powerful ways and mighty works, will not bring a person to believe in Christ. Unbelief is a sin that is hated by GOD!

The nation of Israel largely rejected Christ. The New Testament says: John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (KJV) Even Jesus’ own brothers did not believe on Him. YES! Jesus had brothers and sisters! (Mat.12:46; 13:56). And so it is today, multitudes fail to see that Jesus is the answer to the deepest needs of the human heart, and that Jesus is “the outstretched arm of God” (Eze.20:33), seeking to save us, to pardon our transgressions, and to give us a new joy in life. BUT . . . Jesus does make demands on us, and most He is often rejected.

Jesus' Mother and Brothers
Matthew 12:46-50 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. 47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. 48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. (KJV)

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Matthew 13:53-57 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.(KJV) . . . Also see: Mark 6:4-5; Luke 4:24; John 4:44.

Isaiah 53 tells us of Jesus’ Virgin Birth
Isaiah 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.(KJV)

The beginning of verse 2 is a statement about Christ Jesus humanity. For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. Isaiah is speaking of Jesus, the Son of God, the Creator of the Universe, the One who is without beginning of days or end of years (Heb.7:3). Isaiah says, “He shall grow up” which is a clear reference to the humanity of Jesus.

We cannot understand how God the Son could become a little child, and learn to walk and develop as other human beings do, but . . . we can believe it by faith. Jesus became a Man. He took upon Himself a human body, so that He could die for man’s sins. This seems to be the meaning of the Isaiah’s words when he said, “He shall grow up before him as a tender plant.”

Then Isaiah goes on to give a picture of our LORD’S virgin birth. Jesus was a child like other children (yet without sin, Heb.4:15), but He was not conceived like other children. He was born without a human father, conceived by the Holy Ghost, and born of the Virgin, Mary. Isaiah says, He shall grow up before him like a tender plant, and like a root out of a dry ground. We know that without moisture, nothing can grow. Even on the desert, the cactus-like plants that grow there, must have at least some moisture. For a root to grow up out of dry ground, would require a special miracle . . . and so it was with the conception and birth of Jesus. It was a ‘one time only” special miracle. Just as it is impossible for a root to grow in ground without any moisture, so too, from mankind’s viewpoint, it was impossible for our LORD to be born without a human father.

His Earthly Life
Jesus could well have been called a “Man of holiness” because He was without sin. We could have called Him a “Man of eloquence” because “never man spake like this man” (John 7:46). He could be called a “Man of love” because love and compassion were pillars of His character. But as Isaiah looked down through the centuries, the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus as a “Man of Sorrows.” Isaiah 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (KJV) . . . Beginning in the center of verse 2, Isaiah 53 says, “He hath no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Isaiah 53:3-4 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. (KJV)
This is the Holy Spirit’s own description of the physical appearance and the earthly ministry of the Servant of God, our LORD Jesus Christ.

We know very little about the actual physical appearance of Jesus. The Bible does not tell if He was tall or short, if His hair was light or dark, or if His eyes were brown or blue. But, we do know that He had “no form or comeliness,” and that “there is no beauty that we should desire him.” The LORD Jesus did NOT appear in any way as to attract the natural man. There was NO majestic or kingly characteristics about Him. He was simply a normal Nazarene. I am sure that He was not ugly, but the language in Isaiah 53:2 is such that we have no reason to think that He was especially handsome. The words seem to say that Jesus was ordinary looking Man.

The beginning of verse 4 (in Isaiah 53) can be translated to read, “Surely he has borne our sicknesses and carried our diseases.” Some divine healers say that when Jesus died on the cross, He died for our diseases as well as for our sins . . . and that it is God’s will that all persons should be healed, just as it is God’s will that all persons should be saved. They go to Isaiah 53 to make a case for universal healing. I disagree with this.

There is no doubt that God is able to heal our bodies, but this Passage does NOT teach that Jesus bore our sicknesses when He died on the Cross. Matthew quotes Isaiah 53:4. Mat. 8:16-17 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. (KJV) I do not believe it supports the modern healing movement. “The chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed" . . . of WHAT are we healed? This Passage from Isaiah clearly states that we are healed of our transgressions and iniquities. How can we be sure? The Bible is its own best commentary! 1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. (KJV) . . . Healed of what? SINS!!! Peter makes it very clear that he is talking about SIN!

Matthew says that the statement in Isaiah 53 (about Jesus bearing our sicknesses) is true. It was fulfilled . . . but, it was fulfilled, NOT when Jesus hung on the cross, but during His earthly ministry, healing multitudes who were sick. Jesus healed “every manner of sickness and disease” among the people during His earthly ministry . . . but He did it on the cross, He died for our sins, NOT for our illnesses. So, Isaiah 53:2b-4 describes in part our LORD’S earthly ministry.

When people looked at Jesus, they saw no physical beauty, and the last part of verse 4 says they esteemed Him “stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” He was a Man of Sorrows because of OUR sins. Jesus was born to die on the cross, and the weight of this duty pressed upon His mind in such a way that His Face revealed His sorrow. He was acquainted with grief, and His appearance was so stained that we are distinctly told that “they hid as it were their faces from him.”

There were a few disciples that followed Jesus. There were some godly women who ministered to His needs, and there was the Roman centurion (Luke 23:47), and the Syro-Phoenician woman (Mat.15:21-28) . . . but the vast majority were ready to cry out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” (John 19:6). Many who followed Him and thronged around Him during His ministry, wanted only to see some miracle, or to eat the loaves that had been miraculously provided (John 6:26). And so it is today, many see Jesus as a great teacher and think of Him as a good man. They make a big deal over Christmas and wear fancy clothes on Easter Sunday, but when the Truths of the Gospel are seriously considered, and the demands which He makes on the life of the Christian . . . are pointed out . . . the cost is far too great, and the vast majority of people in the world despise Him and reject Him. Mat. 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (KJV)

Some questions for all TRUE Christians to think about:
#1. Should we accept the approval of the world . . . when the world hates our LORD?
#2. Should worldliness be a problem for the church . . . do we really want to imitate those who hate our Saviour?
#3. Does it hurt to compromise with the world or their false doctrines? . . . To compromise is to find a middle ground, and it will always mean your going against the Truths of Almighty God, in some way. BEWARE!
#4. Does God approve of any ‘alternative’ lifestyle? . . . Much is said today about ‘alternative lifestyles.’ BUT, what does God have to say about homosexuality, living together as an unmarried couple, or being immoral? Some people say that God now accepts any relationship; BUT, the Bible has a very different story. Just because these relationships exist and abound in today’s evil world, does NOT make them right. GOD clearly states they are sin.
Saying "homosexuality is wrong" is not a popular thing to do today. Yet GOD is NOT concerned with what is popular. He is concerned with people’s salvation and their obedience to His Word. Just because homosexuality is viewed as an acceptable lifestyle in our society does not mean it is not a sin. God declared it to be sin when He gave His laws to the Israelites.

What about living together before marriage? and premarital sex? Have you ever thought it was all right to do something just because ‘everybody is doing it’? Today, more and more couples live together outside of marriage, so much that it has become acceptable. And it seems premarital sex is standard, rather than the exception, even down to 10 and 11 year old children. But, has GOD given His approval of these relationships??? NO! Absolutely NOT!!!

If you go against GOD'S divinely instituted plan and do not repent, you shall reap the consequences . . . not only in this life, but in eternity. You can NEVER be close to GOD if you are engaged in ANY immoral behavior. BUT, you will not be busy in any immoral behavior IF you are truly close to God.

His Substitutionary Death
Isaiah 53:5-10 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. These verses describe the sinless Son of God as He died on the Cross for sinful human beings. Verse 5 says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed.” These words speak of SUBSTITUTION . . . JESUS DIED FOR US. The punishment that was loaded upon Him, should have been on us. He took our place on the Cross. The whole thing is summarized in the words of the Apostle Peter, when he said, 1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. (KJV)

The word “transgressions” in verse 5, speaks of our disobedience and rebellion. The word “iniquities” speaks of inborn corruption which drags of our human nature down. The “chastisement for our peace” means that Jesus bore the punishment which gained our peace. The words “wounded” and “bruised” speak of the nails which tore His body and of the spear which pierced His side.

The final phrase of verse 5, “and with his stripes we are healed” is a vivid picture of the scars and blows that were inflicted upon Jesus during the beating and scourging described in.
Mat. 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. (KJV)
The “scourge” was made of the hide of an ox, twisted into knots, into which were inserted sharp pieces of animal bone. After the whipping, they kicked Him and threw Him on the ground. They nailed Him to a cross of wood and then stood it upright and dropped it into the hole with a thud. His body hung on the cross until it is said of Him: Psalm 22:14-17 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. (KJV) . . . My bones: they look and stare upon me . . . they beat our LORD Jesus SO badly that His bones were visible. Jesus bore the stripes for us. The remedy for our disease of sin is found only in wounds of Jesus . . . and in His wounds alone.

Isaiah 53:6 continues: All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. . . . This verse begins with the word “all” and it ends with the word “all.” Between these two ALLS stands Calvary’s cross. The first “all” tells us that the ENTIRE human family is ruined by sin . . . and in the last “all” we see God’s PERFECT REMEDY for that sin . . . that being Christ Jesus. His death IS sufficient for “all” who believe God and trust and accept Him as Saviour. 1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV)
The LORD God hath laid upon His Son the iniquity of us all. Dear one, even if Jesus bore nothing but my sins, it would have been more than enough to crush Him . . . but when I think of my sins multiplied by the sin of the whole world . . . it baffles me.
1 John 2:1-4 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (KJV) . . . NOT for oursins only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

In Isaiah 53:7, Isaiah describes the main events of the day of the crucifixion.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Jesus was the focus of cruel and unjust ridicule, but He kept SILENT. When we suffer any injustice, it is hard to be still. Fires of resentment leap up in our heart and mind, and very soon we begin to mumble, but it was not so with precious Jesus. Pilate marveled greatly at His silence (Mat.27:14; Mark 15:5). Later, they stripped Him and crowned Him with those hideous thorns, blindfolded Him, spit on Him, smote Him with a reed and struck Him in the Face (Mat.27:30; Mark 15:19) . . . still NOT a single word did He speak! Our LORD gives us a great example of how we should act when we are faced with ridicule and scorn . . . but, do we do it??? I know I fail!

In Isaiah 53:8, Isaiah foretells the fact that the Messiah would not have a fair trial.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.There was NO fair trial, He was simply led away to die. Jesus had no physical offspring to perpetuate His Name, and so the Jewish leaders thought a curse from God rested on Him. In Israel it was considered a sign of God’s displeasure if a man died without leaving any children, for that meant that His Name was dying out, and this was understood as a sign of God’s disfavor (Gen.9:1). Children were considered a blessing from Heaven, and the more children, the greater the blessing. It is much different in our day. Many people would rather have a pet dog or a cat than to have children. But when Jesus died without leaving any offspring, they thought God’s curse was upon Him.
But Jesus’ accusers overlooked one thing. The “generation” of Christ Jesus was a spiritual offspring and His seed was a spiritual seed. In Isaiah 53:10, we read that “he shall see his seed.” David describes the sufferings of Jesus in: Psalm 22:30-31 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the LORD for a generation. 31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. (KJV) . . . David says that a seed shall serve Him. A multitude of the Redeemed from all nations will look back to Jesus as the source of life and the origin of their spiritual being.

In Isaiah 53:9 we are given a picture of our LORD’S burial. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
The first part of the verse literally says (in Hebrew), “They appointed his grave with the wicked, but with a rich man he was in his death.” Jesus was crucified between two murderous thieves, and thus they appointed His burial with ungodly guilty men . . . but He was never actually entombed in the place appointed for Him . . . because the Roman authorities handed over His Body to a rich man, Joseph of Arimathea (Mat.27:57–60; Mark 15:42–46; Luke 23:50–53; John 19:38–42).

Isaiah 53:10 says: Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. . . . It pleased the LORD to bruise Him . . . is one of the mysteries of the eternal counsels of Almighty God. Jesus NEVER did one wicked thing, yet it pleased the LORD to let Him die at the hands of wicked sinners.

What tremendous love of the Father, that designed salvation’s plan; what amazing grace that brought it down to man; and what a mighty gulf that Christ Jesus did span, at Calvary.

His Glorious Resurrection. The 53rd chapter of Isaiah does not end with Jesus Christ in the grave. It ends rather with a picture of His glorious resurrection and exaltation.

Isaiah 53:11-12 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.(KJV)
Verse 11 says that He shall see the travail of his soul, and verse 12 says that God will give Him a portion among the great. Dear one, Jesus poured out His Soul when He died. He was “cut off” out of the land of the living; He was appointed “a grave with the wicked”. . . and yet verse 10 stated that “he shall prolong his days.” . . . How was it possible for Jesus “to prolong His days”? The wonderful answer is that Jesus the Messiah, not only died for our sins, but He was raised again for our justification . . . and right now, He sits at the right hand of the Father (Acts 2:33; Heb.8:1; 1 Pet.3:22) to make “intercession for the transgressors.” The word “made” specifies an action that started in the past and continues on into the future. Our LORD’S work of intercession started at the Cross (when He prayed, “Father, forgive them”), and even now He continues on at the right hand of God to make intercession for those who transgress.

The life and death of Jesus was not experienced in vain. Jesus has satisfaction that His death effectively saves many souls. Dear one, we should love Him completely because He did love us first!

To those who have never accepted Christ as personal Saviour: Can you imagine the kind of pain that God will inflict one day upon those who reject Him? Can you picture how grieved God must be . . .when He offers pardon and people turn it down?

To those who have received Christ as Saviour: Let us examine the genuineness of our devotion to God. What if repentance in your life has not been real? What if forsaking sin has not been genuine on your part? What if your turning to God has only been a simple outward profession? As we think seriously about all this . . . let us fly to the wounded side of our Saviour and plead for His mercy . . . and determine in our hearts to serve Him with increasing dedication.

You can bring added joy to the Heart of Jesus by accepting the gift of eternal life that He longs to give you. He does NOT want any payment from you! He asks NOTHING from you, except for you to trust Him! He wants to give you the greatest blessing, the greatest gift this world has to offer! (Jn.4:10; Acts 8:20; 11:17; Rom.5:18; 6:23; 2 Cor.9:15; Eph.2:8-9; Jam.1:17).
Salvation is FREE to all who reach out and grab it! (Rom.5:15, 16, 18). A gift is not yours unless you accept it! Jesus invites you to the foot of the cross where you will find forgiveness for your sins.
We become right with God, NOT by our own works, but by the Messiah's great work on the cross. We are justified (Rom.3:24; 5:1), because twe have claimed Christ, the Righteous Servant, as our Saviour and Lord (Rom.10:9-10, 2 Cor.5:21). We become a new man (Eph.4:24; Col.3:10), for their old life of sin is stripped away, and we are clothed with Christ's goodness (Ps.100:5; Phil.1:6) and His righteousness (1 Cor.1:30).

His death on the cross interceded (intervened) on behalf of sinners who would believe and have faith in what He did on their behalf (1 John 5:10-13). We must believe in faith that what He did on that horrendous cross was for US! When we do, God justifies us because of Christ Jesus! This includes ALL sinners . . . the sins of the world (1 Jn.2:2), and that included those who put Him to death (Ps.22:18; Mat.27:35-36; Mk.15:24. Jn.19:23-24). No sin is too big for God to forgive, IF we repent (turn away from) it. To confess a sin (1 Jn.1:8-9) is simply to agree with God that He is right and we are wrong!

To those who have never accepted Christ as their personal Saviour: Can you imagine the kind of pain that God will inflict one day upon those who reject Him? Can you picture how grieved God must be . . . when He offers pardon and people reject it?

To those who have received Christ as Saviour: Let us examine the genuineness of our devotion to God. Has repentance in your life been real? Was forsaking sin sincere on your part? Was your turning to God, only a mere outward profession? Or was it heartfelt? PLEASE think seriously about these things. You must be honest and sincere about your relationship with our Saviour and plead for His mercy, and resolve in our hearts to serve Him with increasing love and devotion.
