The Revived Roman Empire

We see developments of the resurgence of the ancient Roman Empire. But in reality, did the Roman Empire ever really die? Its government was disbanded and the caesars gone, but the Roman spirit and her many, diverse cultures never passed away. They have remained in place, changing and adapting with the times, for many centuries.

The Encyclopedia Britannica states: “Probably more than any other city in the West, possibly more than any other in the world, (Rome) is a city whose history continues to shape nearly every aspect of its being but, at the same time, whose contemporary consciousness of that history projects it into the very core of modern life” (“Rome,” Britannica CD 2000, Copyright ©1994-2000 by Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc.).

The Roman Empire ruled the world for about 1000 years before its government and political institutions eventually disintegrated. But it still exists in spirit, and she exerts her influence over all the world during the past 1,500 years.

Again, from the Encyclopedia Britannica: "For well over a millennium, Rome controlled the destiny of all civilization known to Europe, then fell into dissolution and disrepair. Physically mutilated, economically paralyzed, politically senile, and militarily impotent by the late Middle Ages, Rome nevertheless remained a world power—as an idea. The force of Rome the lawgiver, teacher, and builder continued to radiate throughout Europe."

Although the situation of the popes from the 6th to the 15th century was often tragic, ridiculous, or shameful, Rome experienced glory as the fountainhead of 'Christianity' ??? and eventually won back her power and wealth and reestablished itself as a place of beauty, a source of learning, and a capital of the arts.

Now we are witnessing the remarkable rebirth of Roman government and political systems.
For the first time since the days of ancient Rome, the nations of Europe and the Mediterranean world have come together, forging alliances, setting up institutions, and functioning effectively as a United States of Europe. The 15-member European Union (EU) has become the greatest economic superpower in the world with a greater combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) than even the United States.
The EU’s website is located at www.europa.eu . There you will find a wealth of information about the EU’s emerging government, which includes a unified economy and common currency, a system of courts, a Secretariat General, a 20-member Commission, and its main governing body, the European Parliament. Plans are also in the works for a combined EU military force to function in concert with NATO. The Roman Empire is alive and well today.

After Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, Daniel had a vision of 4 kingdoms, represented by 4 beasts. (Daniel 7:1-24).

The first beast is described in: Daniel 7:4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. (KJV) . . . Interesting, because the symbol of the ancient Babylon was a lion with eagles wings.

The second beast is described in: Daniel 7:5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. (KJV) . . . The second beast in Daniel 7 is generally accepted as being Medo-Persia because Persia devoured much of the Middle East and Asia, and the Persian Empire had three capitals, Susa, Persepolis, and the conquered Babylon.

Of the third beast: Daniel 7:6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. (KJV) . . . This beast is symbolic of Greece, left behind by Alexander the Great. When Alexander the Great died in 323 C.E., his empire was divided between 4 of his generals.

The following verses describe the 4th beast, or kingdom of Daniel’s dream.
Daniel 7:7-8
After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. 8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. (KJV) . . . We see a fourth beast with 10 horns. The small horn, speaks proud words, rises up and conquers three of them. This is the Antichrist that will come to power through the 4th kingdom. The 10 horns, 3 of which are subdued, are the 10 kings that make up the rulers of the 4th kingdom. From this kingdom and the reign of Antichrist will come a global system of government that will rule over ALL the Earth just before the coming of Christ to establish His Kingdom (Rev.19:11-21; Zec.14:2-5).
Daniel 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. (KJV)
Daniel 7:24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. (KJV) . . . The three kings that are subdued will probably not approve of Antichrist's rise to power or will object to him in some way. It’s interesting that, before the war in Iraq, France, Germany, and Belgium threatened the EU nations that sided with the U.S. with serious consequences if any EU partner joined the coalition to remove Sadam Hussein.

Recent happenings may reveal the position that the future Antichrist will fill in his rise to power. Besides creating an EU constitution, plans are being discussed for an EU presidency that will replace the current 6 month rotating presidency, which would create a powerful leader with great influence on the global scale. The new president would be elected by government heads of EU members and would hold office for five years. It seems they want a powerful president of the EU as head of a European government with full legal and executive power.

Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. (KJV) . . . We are given a clue as to the identity of the little horn here. Romans destroyed Jerusalem (the city) and the temple (the sanctuary). Daniel tells us that from this people shall come the “prince that shall come” or the Antichrist. It makes sense then to say that the Antichrist will rise up from the fourth kingdom that will be the revived Roman Empire.

Daniel 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. (KJV) . . . The Antichrist will be extremely UNGODLY! He will speak blasphemous words against God as he rules over the world, and he will cause intense persecution to the tribulation saints (people who accept Christ after the rapture of His church). A time and times and the dividing of time refers to the three and a half years of the Great Tribulation (Rev.12:14; 13:5).

The EU is definitely becoming a world power of clay (diversity) and iron (power) with striking similarities to the fourth kingdom or fourth beast in Daniel’s prophecies. A world power with so many ethnic groups and representing so many nations could easily become a very influential leader at the United Nations and the world. It’s possible that the U.N. is a beginning for this world government that will eventually be ruled by a revived Roman Empire and the Antichrist.
