God Cannot Lie
Judgments on Sodom and Gomorrah.
Background. In Genesis 18:1-15, the Lord and two angels comes to Abraham to give him the news that Sarah would bear a son. Gen.18:11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. [KJV] . . . Both were very old and Sarah was far beyond child-bearing age. But with God NOTHING is impossible (Mat.19:26; Gen.18:14; Job 42:2; Jer.32:17; Luke 1:37). After Abraham extended warm hospitality to his three distinguished guests, they continued on their journey. We must be careful to extend brotherly love to all. Heb.13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. [KJV]
Genesis 18:16-22 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. [17] And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; [18] Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? [19] For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. [20] And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; [21] I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. [22] And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. [KJV] . . . Abraham went with his guests to show them the way, which was being a good host, to direct strangers in the way. Public roads did not exist.
Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do . . . is really the Lord telling Abraham that He would not hide from him what was about to happen, because Abraham would become a great and mighty nation. The revelation that the Lord made to him would be preserved among his descendants; and the exact fulfillment of God's Promises, made so long before, would lead them to believe in His Name and trust in His goodness.
And they shall keep the way of the Lord . . . means true religion, true worship, God's WAY . . . following the path that our Lord Himself walks. Trust and obey, for there is NO other way! We as His followers today, must do justice and judgment; and not only preserve the Truth but maintain it in our daily lives.
Abraham's descendants strayed from God MANY times, causing God's wrath and judgment. We too are Abraham's children, not physically but spiritually (Gal.3:6-9, 27-29). We must be careful not to excite God's wrath because of OUR disobedience to Him.
WHY did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen.13:13). The men of Sodom were wicked. . . people who broke all the rules of God, confusing what was right from that which was wrong.
Being wicked is being completely evil within . . . every affection and passion depraved and out of step with God, seeking happiness where it can never be found, and not worrying who they hurt in the process. They lust after worldly honors, possessions, and sensual fulfillment . . . the end of which leads only to disappointment, affliction, and ruin. This is where Lot had chosen to settle. This, however, amounts to no more than the common character of sinful man; but the people of Sodom were exceedingly sinful and wicked before, or against, the Lord—they were sinners of no common character; they excelled in unrighteousness, and soon filled up the measure of their iniquities.
And the men turned their faces (vs.22) . . . the two "men" were two angels who accompanied our Lord. I believe that the third Man (18:2) was the pre-incarnate Christ. It may be possible that the LORD remained with Abraham to teach him the vast importance of faith and prayer. This is a lesson we all should learn and learn well!
Gen.18:20-21 And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; [21] I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. [KJV] . . . The Lord went down from Heaven to see just how bad things were in Sodom and Gomorrah. He did NOT want to destroy the people. Ezekiel 18:23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? [KJV] The Lord wanted the people to repent of their wickedness, and live. They did not repent!
Abraham makes intercession for its people
Genesis 18:23-33And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? [24] Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? [25] That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? [26] And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. [27] And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes: [28] Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it. [29] And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. [30] And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there. [31] And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. [32] And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. [33] And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place. [KJV] . . . Abraham begged the Lord for mercy in a wonderful prayer of intercession for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Gen.18:23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? [KJV] He asked the Lord “If there are 50 . . . 45 . . . 40. . . 30 . . . 20 . . . 10, will you spare the city? He went from 50 down to 10. The Lord said He would spare the city if there were just 10 righteous there. There were NOT even 10 righteous people there. In my humble opinion, there was NOT even one righteous person there OR God would have spared that person, because He spared Lot and his daughters.
Destruction fulfilled. Genesis 19:24-29Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; [25] And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. [26] But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. [27]And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD: [28] And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. [29] And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. [KJV] . . . God utterly destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of their immoral homosexual lifestyle! God did NOT lie! This should be a warning to the world today, but to most people, it is not.
