God Cannot Lie

Judgment on Godly Individuals in OT

Moses. Background. Most of the people I will bring forth in the judgment of God series are hardened sinners, ungodly men; but not with Moses, he was a righteous and godly man (Ex.19:20; 34:29; Num.12:3; Deut.33:1; 34:5-6; 18:18; Mat.17:3). He was chosen by God for a tremendous job and he did it well. He was one of the very limited few that spoke to God "face to face" (Ex.33:11; Deut.5:4; 34:10). Moses sin was disobedience to Almighty God. Moses was so angry with the Israelites' constant belly-aching that self control flew away! A warning to us today.

Num.20:7-11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, [8] Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. [9] And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. [10] And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? [11] And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. [KJV] . . . God told Moses to SPEAK to the rock, NOT strike it! And Moses struck the Rock TWICE! WHY was this such a horrible sin? The ROCK represented Jesus! It was a symbol of Christ. 1 Cor.10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. [KJV] . . . The actual physical rock that Moses struck did NOT literally follow the people. This is speaking spiritually . . . and as this verse states, that Rock that followed (accompanied) the people was Christ Jesus. The pillar of cloud and fire (Ex.13:21-22; 14:24; Num.14:14; Neh.9:12,19) too was Christ. Christ was always with the people.

Warning, Promise! Num.20:12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them. [KJV] . . . Moses and Aaron should have known better! They did not believe God. They did not obey God.

Fulfillment. Numbers 27:12-14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel. [13] And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered. [14] For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. [KJV] Deut.32:49-52 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession: [50] And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people: [51] Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel. [52] Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel. [KJV] . . . God kept His threat, His Promise to Moses. Moses did SEE the Promised Land, but was NOT allowed to enter into it. Moses died on the mountain, and God Himself buried him. Deut.34:5-6 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day. [KJV]

Aaron. Background. Aaron was with Moses when Moses struck the Rock. God held him accountable too. Aaron, like Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised Land.

Numbers 20:23-28 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying, [24] Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah. [25] Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor: [26] And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there. [27] And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. [28] And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount. [KJV]

Deut.10:6 And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead. [KJV]

Miriam. Background. Num.12:1-9 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. [2] And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. [3] (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) [4] And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. [5] And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. [6] And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. [7] My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. [8] With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? [9] And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed. [KJV] . . . Miriam and Aaron rebel against Moses, because of the Ethiopian woman he had married, also because of jealousy of his increasing power and authority (vs 1-2). Aaron and Miriam are suddenly called to the tabernacle (vs 4). The Lord appears in the pillar of the cloud, and speaks to them (vs 5). The Lord clearly states He will communicate His will ONLY to Moses (vs 6-8). His anger is kindled against them.

Numbers 12:10-15 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. [11] And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned. [12] Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb. [13] And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee. [14] And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again. [15] And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again. [KJV] . . . Miriam is smitten with the leprosy (vs 9-10). Aaron hates and repents of their sin, and pleads for mercy for Miriam (vs 11-12). Moses also intercedes for her (vs 13). The Lord's penalty requires that she be shut out of the camp for seven days (vs 14). The people rest till she is restored of her leprosy (vs 15).

God can bring judgment on sin to any person (wicked OR righteous) when they revolt against Him. It may be immediate, or later. His choice! We should remember this.

David. Background. 2 Samuel 11. David sends Joab against the Ammonites, who besieges the city of Rabbah (vs 1). He sees Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, taking a bath and is smitten with her. He sends for her and takes her to his bed (vs 2-4). She conceives, and tells David (vs 5). David sends word to Joab to send and orders him to send Uriah to him (vs 6). David having inquired the state of the army, dismisses him, wanting him to go home to Bathsheba (vs 7-8), but Uriah sleeps at the door of the king's house, refusing to go home (vs 9). The next day David urges him to go to his house; but he refuses to go, giving the loyal reasons for his refusal (vs 10-11). David after two days sends him back to the army, with a letter to Joab, telling him to place Uriah in the front of the battle, that he may be killed (vs 12-15). Joab does and Uriah is killed in battle (vs 16-17). Joab sends David this news (vs 18-25). David sends for Bath-sheba and marries her, and she bears him a son (vs 26-27).

Warning. 2 Samuel 12:1-14 And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. [2] The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: [3] But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. [4] And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. [5] And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: [6] And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. [7] And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; [8] And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. [9] Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. [10] Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. [11] Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. [12] For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. [13] And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. [14] Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. [KJV] . . . God knows our every thought. We CANNOT hide anything from Him! And what He promises, shall happen, be it good or bad!

Judgment Fulfilled. 2 Samuel 12:18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? [KJV] . . . David's son would die.

2 Samuel 16:20-22 Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give counsel among you what we shall do. [21] And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father's concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong. [22] So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel. [KJV] . . . 2 Samuel 12:11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun . . . This was fulfilled, but it was David's own son . . . God said that: "I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house" and He did!

God CANNOT lie!

David hid many of his actions from people. But God saw everything that David did. 2 Samuel 12:9-10 reveals David’s worst sin. He disobeyed and disrespected God and His law.

King Saul did not obey God's commands, and God punished him. He said that Saul would not be the king any more (1 Samuel 13:13-14 and 15:23). God’s punishment always matches the person's sin. In David's case, there would be wars and trouble in his family. He would also lose his wives (16:21-22). David sinned in secret but his punishment would be in public. Read about David’s troubles in the remainder of 2 Samuel.

People watch their leaders and often copy them. David's sin would affect all Israel. It would also affect God's enemies (vs 14). David sinned . . . God punished David, just like He punished the great leader Moses (above). Many people think God's punishments are too severe. God is holy and pure and NEVER lies. He says He will bring judgment on sin and He will! All leaders teach by the way that they act. In the New Testament, James says that God will be stricter with teachers than with other people.

James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. [KJV] . . . This verse has always made my prayer for myself to be: "Lord, give me wisdom and words. Thy will be done, not mine." I really fear teaching falsely.
