God Keeps His Promises
Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) (KJV)
What is a PROMISE? A promise is a spoken or written commitment or pledge to do a certain thing OR to not do something. So, a divine Promise is God’s Word that He will do what He says.
In the Bible, the Lord makes two types of Promises:
#1. Unconditional Promises. This is a promise made without exceptions. The Lord’s covenant with Abraham is a good example of this.
Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (KJV) . . . God promised to make Abram a great nation and bless ALL the families of the Earth through him. As his descendent, Jesus Christ fulfilled this Promised blessing because salvation is available to everyone (whosoever) believes in Him. John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
#2. Conditional Promises. This kind of Promise is subject to certain commands, directions or orders. For example, the offer of salvation is a conditional Promise.
Matthew 10:32-33 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. (KJV)
Luke 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: (KJV)
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (KJV)
1 John 4:2-3 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. (KJV)
Even though God makes both kinds of Promises in the Bible, we as humans can only make conditional ones because there is NO way that we can control every circumstance, like God can. There are at times circumstances beyond our control that may stop us from keeping our promises . . . but the sovereign LORD of the Universe has never failed to fulfill His Word, nor will He ever fail to keep it!
Do we ever misunderstand God’s Promises? Do we ever become disappointed in God because we think He has failed to keep His Word? YES!!! I think we all have at some time or other. But dear one, the problem is our NOT understanding, it is NEVER God’s unfaithfulness. God will NOT ever break a Promise!
God is completely trustworthy at ALL times! The reliability and security of any promise always depends on the character and ability of the one who makes it. For us to really understand WHY God will ALWAYS do what He says, we must totally understand His pure and unchanging character and the qualities that prove He can be depended upon and trusted. He is:
#1. Truthful (honest)
#2. Faithful (never dishonest)
#3. Immutable (never changes)
#4. Love (compassionate, full of grace and mercy)
God has abundant ability to fulfill His Promises! We must understand just how capable and powerful He is. God is ALWAYS able to fulfill His Promises because He is:
Omniscient (all-knowing)
Omnipresent (present everywhere)
Omnipotent (all-powerful)
Because Almighty God is absolutely sufficient and trustworthy in every respect, we have a perfect guarantee that He will ALWAYS keep His Promises. In order to receive what He wants to provide, we must:
<><><>Believe God. 1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)
<><><>
Obey God. John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. (KJV)
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (KJV)
<><><>Claim the Promise. Only when we claim a certain Promise of God, in FAITH, for ourselves, it will not come true.
Because of bad health, I claim several for myself, and they ALL are being fulfilled in my life each day.
<><><>Never give me more than I can bear: 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV)
<><><>His grace is always sufficient:
2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (KJV)
<><><>He will never leave me, never forsake me: Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (KJV)
<><><>He gives me comfort and peace: John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (KJV)
The TRUE Christian depends fully upon God’s Promises, and His Holy Word is filled with them. What we need to remember is not how many promises there are, but the FACT that God keeps, or shall keep, every single one.
Questions:
#1. Is there something that keeps you from trusting God?
#2. Do you trust His Word in situations you’re concerned about today?
#3. Do you really have FAITH in God?
#4. Have you claimed any of God’s Promises?
#5. If you claimed a Promise, did you FEEL it working?
#6. Do you believe God will keep His Promises today as He has in the past?
