True Spirituality
True spirituality is NOT something to be achieved or conquered. It is better understood to be an unending journey as we walk through our Christian life. The first step toward being spiritual is to be born of God’s Spirit by accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour. If someone does not believe that Jesus is the ONLY Way to the Father, they are spiritually dead. Any person who dies without being “born again” shall be sentenced to the fiery pits of Hell for eternity.
John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV)
Luke 16:22-23 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. (KJV)
1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (KJV)
When we are born again (John 14:6), our spirit is made alive in Christ and we begin the process of sanctification (being made holy), until Jesus comes or until we die (Rom. 8:11; Eph.2:5; 1 Peter 3:18–19; 1 Cor.15:22).

The Bible compares a spiritual person with the natural person for us.
1 Cor. 2:14-16 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. (KJV)
Being spiritual means to be born again . . . and having the Holy Spirit reside within us . . . just the opposite of a natural person, who has not been born again. To be spiritual means walking in the Spirit, and living under the Spirit’s guidance.
Just stopping immoral no-no’s and carrying out godly duties does NOT make a person spiritual. The Pharisees were great at keeping rules, but being spiritual is not accomplished by outward works or obeying laws. Spiritually is the inner work of the Holy Spirit as He renews the mind and conforms the heart of the believer into the image of Christ.
Eph. 4:22-24 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. (KJV) A TRUE Christian is to cast away, put off, lay aside, reject and renounce our old ways, by allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts and attitudes.
When we concentrate on letting God transform us from deep down inside, in those areas we sometimes try to hide from ourselves and others, the result will be outward change as well. To be spiritual, means we truly want and seek change in our inner selves.
Eph. 3:16-17 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (KJV)
Just a tree whose roots go down deep, means that the love in our hearts should be as firm as a tree is firmly planted in the soil, whose roots go deep into the Earth.
2 Cor.4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. (KJV)
Our outward man, decays daily as to the strength and vigor. . . but, by the strength and comfort of our inner man (our souls and spirits) are renewed day by day. As we grow older, we begin to die as far as the body is concerned, but we grow in grace and in the knowledge of Christ in our inner man.
What Is the Difference Between a Soul and a Spirit?
The soul is the humanity part of us that makes us feel emotions The spirit is our deeper connection with the Lord when we believe in God and receive Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord. It is very difficult to separate the soul from the spirit.
What are their differences? The Bible gives us light about these confusing concepts.
Body, Soul and Spirit in the Bible
There are places in the Bible where the body, soul, and spirit are mentioned. One of these is in: 1 Thes. 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)
This verse clearly states that we are made up of three parts: body, soul and spirit. The verse also uses the word “and,” which in the original Greek language means to differ from each other. So, this clearly states that each part is different and has a different role in us.
It is easy to separate the body as physical, which means using the five senses; the sense of sight, the sense of hearing, the sense of taste, the sense of smell, and the sense of touch.
The spirit and soul are much more difficult because they seem alike but are actually very different. They each have different jobs in our lives as Christians, as it is stated in: Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (KJV)
It is quite clear in this verse that the spirit and soul are separate and that the Word of God separates these two parts from each other. What Is the Difference between Soul and Spirit?
It is a blessing that we have three parts, the body, the soul, and the spirit. All of these parts have specific functions. The body is our physical functions and here we feel our physical senses such as the sense of sight, taste, smell, hear, and touch. The soul on the other hand is our humanity that makes us feel emotions. It is our way to magnify God through our human limitations.
Finally, the spirit is our spiritual and deeper connection with the Lord. We express our love to God and Christ Jesus through our spirit because this is one of the gifts that Christ gave us when He became Man and died for our sins. Because of this, we can use our spirit only if we believe in God and Christ and if we obey the spirit.
1 Pet. 3:11-12 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. (KJV)
Let him seek peace . . . not only with God and his own conscience, but with his neighbors as well. Mat.5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (KJV)
And ensue it . . . seeking and striving for a serious desire of peace. When we seek it, it may seem to flee from us, but we must be adamant and follow it.
Heb. 12:14-15 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; (KJV)
We must be patient . . . because God takes up our case against our enemies, and shall avenge us. Any time that we think we can repay them by our unwarranted malice, we make God our enemy!
Christians have special rules:
- #1. Be one of mind (1Pet. 3:8; Eph. 4:1-3).
- #2. Have compassion on one another (1Pet. 3:8).
- #3. Love as brethren (1Pet. 3:8; 1Cor. 13).
- #4. Be pitiful, courteous, tenderhearted (1Pet. 3:8).
- #5. Not rendering evil for evil (1Pet. 3:9).
- #6. Not railing for railing (1Pet. 3:9).
- #7. Be a blessing to others (1Pet. 3:9).
- #8. Control the tongue (1Pet. 3:10; Jas. 3).
- #9. Shun evil and do good (1Pet. 3:11).
- #10. Seek peace and pursue it (1Pet. 3:11).
To be spiritual, wet must re-train our minds to always pay attention to what the Holy Spirit within us desires.
Rom. 8:5-9 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (KJV)
Gal 5:16-17This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. (KJV)
Spiritual growth will not take place unless we STOP our sinful, fleshly desires and feed the spiritual side of our being.
Notice the evil sins below:
Gal 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (KJV)
The apostle Paul says that this is like “putting to death” or “crucifying” our old, sinful nature (Gal.2:20, 5:24). We must die to the desires of the flesh daily, and never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. To be a TRUE Christian means taking up our cross every day.
https://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm
Mat.16:24-26 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (KJV)
Take up his cross . . . means to gladly receive and patiently bear every affliction and evil (1 Thes.5:18), no matter how shameful and painful it may be, for we always have One to help us. We are to quietly submit, and carry our cross (denial of self), and totally accepting the will of God, as we imitate our Lord Jesus. We do not to take up Christ's Cross but our own cross. There absolutely IS a cross for you and a cross for me . . . IF we are sincere in our desire to follow Him.
And follow me . . . following Jesus is an exercise of grace, humility, zeal, patience and self-denial. No more ME, ME, ME! Following Jesus is all about Jesus! Following Jesus is to surrender to God your will, affections, body and soul. Following Jesus is NOT to seek your own happiness as the supreme object, but be willing to renounce all, and lay down your life, if that is what is required.
Mat. 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.(KJV)
To be spiritual involves living by faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross: When He died, He died ONCE (only once) to break the power of sin. But now that He lives, He lives for the glory of God. We also should consider ourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.
Rom. 6:10-11 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV)
Jesus is NOT dead! Jesus is alive and well, at the right Hand of God (Heb.10:12; 12:2). Jesus died ONCE to defeat sin (Rom.6:10-11; Heb.9:28; 1 Pet.3:18), and now He lives for the glory of God. Jesus died only ONCE! He was raised! He would never die again. He lives always in order to praise God the Father. Our resurrection will be like Christ’s resurrection. We too shall not die again. TRUE believers shall live with Christ always to give honour and glory to God, to Whom it belongs. (Heb.7:27; 9:12,25-28; 10:10-14; 1 Pet.3:18). Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (KJV) . . . It is my opinion that Catholics are so WRONG!

It is impossible to nurture or support true spirituality by our own works, energy or strength. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we put to death the sinful nature. Dear one, we have NO obligation to do what our sinful nature urges us to do. IF we live by what our sinful nature tells us, we shall die (John 3:18). But IF through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
Rom. 8:13-14 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (KJV)
We are simply to place our faith in God’s Promise to bring forth the fruit of His Spirit in our lives. To be like Christ Jesus is what it means to be truly spiritual, and NONE of us can do it without the Lord Jesus!
