Things That Are Happening NOW!
2 Timothy 3:1-7 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (KJV)
The Bible warns of the coming apostasy. In the above Passage, Paul warns of the apostasy that SHALL come in the last days. He also gives us the remedy for that apostasy, which is the Word of God. That is so important and meaningful for us today.
Paul is telling Timothy something very important that he wants him to know . . . what to expect and what is to be the future of the church. "The last days" is a term used in several places in the New Testament, meaning the last days of the church which immediately precede the Rapture of the church.
The last days of the church are not the same as the last days of the nation Israel, which is mentioned repeatedly in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament the last days are called "the time of the end" (Dan.8:17; 11:35; 12:4,9), which is the Great Tribulation period. That is quite different from the last days of the church, which precede the Rapture of the church.
The apostasy that began in the church in Paul's day will continue. Paul warned the church at Ephesus that false leaders would enter the church after he died. Acts 20:29-30 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. (KJV) . . . They will NOT give out the TRUTH of the Word of God, but will fleece the congregations.
"Perilous times shall come," which means grievous or desperate times are coming. Some say that the world is getting better and better, and that the world will be converted. I disagree. The Bible does NOT teach that! That is simply the pipe dream of idealists.
Let's see just what the Bible does say in this Passage. There are 19 different descriptions given in this Passage, and an ugly brood it is! We should seriously consider them because they represent the best Bible picture of what is happening today. I truly do believe that we are rapidly moving into the last days of the church. WHY? do I say this? ALL the things mentioned in these verses are taking place today. If you look back in the history of the church, you could find some of these things in evidence, but never could you ever find a period in which ALL of them are so clearly noticeable as they are today. I sincerely believe that we are now in these "perilous" days which are described in this Passage. I do not know how much longer it will last, but I am certain of this . . . it will get worse, not better.
(KJV)
There are 19 words or phrases used to describe the last days.
#1. "Lovers of their own selves" me, me, me! This is very much evidence of this in our culture today. People want to be praised. People want to be complimented. Churches do NOT tell the people that they are sinners and need a Saviour; they tell them how wonderful they are because they want that almighty dollar! 2 Tim. 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; (KJV) . . . Probably there has never been a time when self-love has been so common.
#2. "Covetous" means lovers of money, greedy. This follows on the heels of self-love, because lovers of self become lovers of money. This old nature likes to have a lot of money spent on it. 1 Tim. 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (KJV) . . . Money is not bad in itself. We need money to survive. The problem is . . . our attitude toward our money. Covetousness reveals itself not only in the attaining wealth, but also how we use it.
#3. "Boasters." That word has in it the idea of swaggerers. You can sometimes tell a proud man by the way he walks. He walks like a peacock; he swaggers. Proverbs 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. (KJV)
#4. "Proud" means haughty.
#5. "Blasphemers" is someone who takes the Name of God in vain in any way. There are very few newer movies or TV programs where the Name of Jesus is not used constantly, NOT in respect but in total disrespect! People cannot talk any more without blasphemy! Blasphemers could also be translated railers which includes those who are always poking their noses into somebody else's business.
#6. "Disobedient to parents." Certainly this is self-evident. It is rare that a teenager is not in complete rebellion against their parents!
#7. "Unthankful." Many people receive kindnesses from others with NO thought whatsoever of thanking them. And these expect and accept everything from God, BUT they NEVER thank Him.
#8. "Unholy" is profane. These are actually totally against God in their speech and in their manner of life.
#9. "Without natural affection" means having abnormal relationships. Today, homosexuality is widely accepted as normal conduct. But . . . what does God say? Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (KJV) . . . According to God, humanity sinks to its lowest level when it accepts homosexuality. My friend, it also includes abortion. . . . http://www.hisservants.org/abortion_h_s.htm
#10. "Trucebreakers" are people who are impossible to get along with. They are liars, they do not know how to tell the truth. And if they make a promise, they break it!
#11. "False accusers" certainly abound today! Gossips, talebearers, lying on the witness stand.
#12. "Incontinent" means no self-control. That covers a large part of our contemporary society.
#13. "Fierce" means savage. In our day the city streets have become asphalt jungles. Many of them are not even safe in the daylight.
#14. "Despisers of those that are good" could be translated haters of the good. We see evidence of that abroad!
#15. "Traitors" are betrayers. There are some people you simply cannot trust.
#16. "Heady" means reckless.
#17. "Highminded" means blinded by pride or drunk with pride.
#18. "Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God." This actually characterizes mankind in our day. Never has there been a time when so much money has been spent in order to provide pleasure. Look at the sports and entertainment events today. These are the things that are attracting millions of people. That is exactly the route Rome took when it went down. There are billions of dollars being spent for entertainment because men are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.
#19. "Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof." People go through the rites and rituals of religion but lack love and reality. "From such turn away" means that TRUE believers are to avoid them. If you are in a cold, dead, liberal church, and you are a TRUE believer, what are you doing there? God's Word says to "turn away". There are some good pastors out there who are faithfully preaching the Word of God. Find one!
